High Resistance to Gasoline/Diesel
Question:
Dear Professor Polymer, We are looking at developing a new type of gas cap that will involve the use of a lot of plastic parts. What type of plastic would you recommend that has a very high resistance to the effects of gasoline/diesel and is also very strong? Do we also need a special gasoline resistant pigment if we want to color it and if so what do you recommend ? Thanks for your help.
- Paul
Answer:
Dear Paul, Olefin materials will have a very high resistance to the petroleum. Glass-reinforced polypropylene would give the highest properties without getting exotic. High density polyethylene is used for blow molded gasoline tanks commonly; the physical properties may not be as high as you would like.
Various nylon grades may have the chemical resistance you seek. Additionally, nylon presents a good barrier against transmission of petrol fumes; olefins do not.
Regarding pigments, the inorganic pigments typically used in outdoor applications should have no problems with chemical fading. Avoid dyestuffs and soluble organic pigments.
