Meeting a Challenge

A Midwest Customer approached TPG with a challenging issue. They manufactured Security Tags from a Polyolefin product and wanted to be able to write directly on the Tags without the use of an Adhesive Paper Label.

TPG accepted the challenge and developed a proprietary product RMT-2010 for the application. The formula was designed to increase the surface energy of the Polypropylene surface. This was accomplished by the addition of special surface-modified talc filler, in combination with a coupling agent designed to improve ink adhesion.

The customer was able to use the ballpoint ink directly onto the Tag surface and then simply wait a few seconds for it to dry completely. Subsequent adhesion studies showed that it allowed the ink to adhere without smudging and ink transfer.
